Ruben Dario Villa
Board Member

Ruben is a first-generation college graduate born in San José, CA to Mexican immigrant parents, and has always viewed his ability to carve his own path as his “unfair advantage” in life.

Being the first in his family to experience many milestones — including college, corporate work, tech, and freelancing — Ruben had to embrace the discomfort of not knowing what he didn’t know. While this made it more difficult to get started, it also meant he didn’t know what to fear, which ultimately proved to be liberating.

After graduating college during a national recession, Ruben applied for a position at a company in Cupertino that was looking for a Photoshop expert, despite being self-taught in Photoshop. Years later, Ruben made the bold decision to leave his 6-figure design job at Apple to start an air freshener business. His entrepreneurial spirit paid off when he landed a position at Google, where he grew as a designer and creative leader, all while expanding his air freshener business, Fúchila Fresheners, into an international brand featured on Netflix and Starz.

After 12 years in tech, Ruben’s journey took another turn when he was laid off, which he views as a nudge from God and Google toward his true calling. He pivoted to running a creative studio and dedicated himself to serving his community in Gilroy, CA, South County, and beyond.

Ruben’s journey through, out of, and beyond tech has been unconventional, but his hustle, resilience, and faith in God have continued to open doors for him — doors he is determined to keep open for others who follow.
